~ Directing ~
The Observer
I spent much of my time the last few years, sitting in the assistant director’s seat for many productions. I did not understand what value this had until recently. The opportunity to observe professional directors at work is invaluable for all theater positions. I have learned about casting, ensemble building, healthy collaboration, and acting technique.
Romeo + Juliet
My first professional directing opportunity came through a friend that ran an all womxn Shakespeare company in New York City called Lady Shakes Theatre Co. I was lucky enough to be assistant director for their inaugural production, an adaptation of Romeo + Juliet, starring two women in the titular roles. On top of producing, the director was also playing Romeo. Many of the main directing responsibilities were transferred to me, so that she could focus on on acting. This experience revealed how the role of director can be one of listening, following, and maintaining openness to changing circumstances.
